Upcoming Lecture: The Truth About Stem Cells
If you’re in the Boston area, this upcoming lecture Monday night at Wellesley might be of interest to you. I’ve heard the speaker before and can testify he gives a very educational, scientific talk.
Rev. Dr. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, a priest of the Diocese of Fall River, Mass., has a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Yale University, where he focused on cloning genes for neurotransmitter transporters which are expressed in the brain. He also worked for several years as a molecular biologist at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He has testified before members of the Massachusetts and Wisconsin State Legislatures during deliberations over a bill to ban human cloning. He has given presentations and participated in round tables on stem cells, cloning and other biotechnologies throughout the United States and in Europe.

So whats his punchline?
September 12th, 2005 at 6:55 am
In short: adult stem cells have actually shown results, embryonic stem cells haven’t — there are serious ethical issues around embryonic stem cells and their actual proven results do not justify their use when the ethical alternative, adult stem cells, works well.

Is there somewhere specific in the body that you get adult stem cells from? I thought the whole point of using embroyonic cells were that they were undifferentiated and could grow into any type of cell.

Bone marrow cells; there also exist other places — I’ll have more details after my memory is refreshed tonight :)
