Sword and Shield

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

first the Lord
gave me a shield
and now He has
given me a sword

actions are not
the inevitable consquences
of thought
free will is will

i as yet control
my deeds and doings
even if sometimes
my thoughts happen to stray

i can think freely
and thus freely think
of something else
of something clean and pure

Christ crucified
His anguish, suffering
His body and blood
Nailed to a dead tree

Arisen, three days after
Anew, clothed in radiant white
I turn my thoughts to Him
and find in my weakness Strength

Strength with which
to shield my thoughts
and swing my sword
to cut off evil deeds dark

I surrender to you, Lord
I am yours to command
Guide me and lead me, Lord
Unto the Victory Before Time

Along the Way of the Cross near the Chapel of Madonna Della Corona.

Nine Lines

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

make me humble and pure
Lord
make me humble and pure

i’m so tired of fighting, Lord

Don’t Fight
Simply Surrender To Me

grant me, Lord, Your Grace,
that i might ask for Your Grace,
to live according to Your Grace.

Self-portrait in a motorcycle mirror

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

Self-portrait in a motorcycle mirror.

From Tertio Millennio. Was walking on George Weigel’s walking tour of Krakow, in the footsteps of Karol Wojtyla, and had my camera out when we were walking past this motorcycle. Leaned down and took a shot and this photo was the result.

This post is the first in a new style of blog post I’m calling “A Photo” (until someone suggests a better name). The idea is that every so often I’ll select a photo that I particularly like from photos.dominik.net and tell a bit more about the story behind the photo, its special meaning or the like. photos.dominik.net, Tertio Millennio Photos

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

I’m very happy to announce the launch of photos.dominik.net, my digital photo album, hosted through SmugMug. The nice thing about SmugMug is that for a reasonable yearly fee, I get unlimited storage and (practically) unlimited bandwith (the limit is 1 PB = 1,000 TB = 1,000,000 GB). If you’re looking to host photos, I highly recommend it. If you do decide to sign up, please use my referrer code (851GILQDGOtEs) to save $5 on the subscription fee!

To inaugurate the launch, I’ve put up my 1,568 photos from Tertio Millennio which recently concluded. It was a life-changing experience which I’ll blog more about in a bit.

photos.dominik.net will continue to evolve and expand as I go through my collection of nearly 30,000 digital photos and publish them online. Look for updates in the future :)movies swinger webcambbw movies free pornhollywood scenes nude moviesex scenes from moviesamateur xxx free moviesmovie porn animegalleries lesbian movie freemovies gyno Map

Lady of the Blue Mantle

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

In her face I find beauty
maternal sorrow and maternal love
two scars upon her right cheek
lips silent, eyes piercing

her blue mantle enfolds me
marked with stars
she wears the night sky as a cloak
gold-trimmed, edged with love

there is something to be said
about her eyes
so deeply penetrating
seeing into my soul

a mother’s instinct
a mother’s knowledge
there is a great tenderness in these eyes
a caring love unmatched

sometimes she almost seems to smile
gladdened, perhaps, by the presence of her child
yet her gaze remains demanding
one of merciful love

i do not want add more scars
nor give tears cause to run
so I shall strive to do good
now and always

Embryonic Stem Cell Research Funding Bill Before Congress

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

Please oppose embryonic stem cell research and any funding of it. Embryonic stem cell research destroys human embryos, which, scientifically, are human lives. Do we want to be a nation that kills thousands of living embryos (lives unworthy of life?) — creating a modern day pharmaceutical Auschwitz? Just because an embryo is younger and smaller than other humans doesn’t mean that it isn’t human. Best of all, there is already a workable alternative: adult stem cell research.

Adult stem cell research holds much more immediate promise. Indeed, there have already been remedies derived from adult stem cell research, while there has yet to be any real benefits from embryonic stem cell research. Let’s invest our tax dollars in adult stem cell research, which has
already proved effective and does not involve destroying human lives.

Contact your Congressional Representatives and tell them to oppose funding embryonic stem cell research while encouraging them to support funding adult stem cell research.

Auschwitz

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

Even the trees are silent
They do not wish to admit
That which they have seen
The birds chirp, unknowingly

The trees know, they remember
And now they stand, drawn inward
Upon themselves
As if shivering away from this place of horrors

The branches do not grow out, they grow in
And up, as if to flee that which
That which the trees cannot believe
Had happened in their youth

Perhaps the trees point the way
The road to freedom, the only one not
Closed off by barbed wire fences
That of upwards, to the sky

Not via the crematorium
For not all things human burn
But rather that flight of souls
To eternal rest, salvation and hope

Where forever they will be free of tyranny and horror
And their sufferings and sacrifices, their blood
will have been redemptive, in so much as they bore it
as best as they could, on earth

never losing their soul, even through their bodies
were wasted away
starved, locked up in rooms
one meter square, with three others

yet never did these brave souls compromise
never did they give in to evil
diligently they squared their souls
and fought, silently, uncompromising with tyranny

silently continuing their song
even as megaphones blared news
of fresh military victories of their earthy enemies
but they, redeemed, know which side wins in the end

Telephony Overseas

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

After a couple days in Poland, I’ve explored a variety of options when it comes to communication. In the US, we generally use phone cards: call an 800 number from a pay phone and then enter your pin and dial. It’s pretty cheap and effective.

I have one of those phone cards and know the Polish 800 access number — but the priory where we’re staying for Tertio Millennio doesn’t have phones we can use, so we have to go a bit out to a payphone. The catch here is that the Polish telecommunications firm, tp, has disabled 800 numbers from pay phones. So I have to go buy a special card with a chip in it, slide it into a pay phone and then call. Unfortunately, that means that I have to pay about 33 cents a minute to be able to call using my phone card’s 5-8 cents a minute. That’s pretty expensive for voice telecommunications, so I asked some of the Krakow natives what they do instead.

Their answer was Skype, which is Voice over IP telephony software that is all the rage in Europe, because it’s so much cheaper than phone services. For example, to call to the US from Poland using Skype (which requires a computer, internet connection and headset/mic — which the priory does have available for us to use), it only cost me 2 cents a minute. That’s far more reasonable in my opinion. And Skype-to-Skype calls (i.e. calls that don’t go to a landline phone) are entirely free. And for about 11 more months, Skype-to-Landline Phones within the US (from the US) is also free, thanks to Skype having been bought by eBay. I’m not sure why Skype hasn’t caught on in the United States yet, as the quality and ease of use is really great. I know that in my apartment this Fall for law school, I’m not going to bother getting a landline or paying for oldstyle telephone service. I’ll just get internet access and use Skype.

Safely in Poland

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

Arrived safely in Poland; a bit jet-lagged (6 hours of night disappeared), but I’m sure I’ll be OK in a day or two. The weather here is absolutely amazing, 75 F, no humidity and clear sunshine dotted with some puffy white clouds.

Visited family today. I’ll try to upload photos to Google’s new Picasa Web Albums service once I find some usable wireless (that might be a while, and might not happen depending on the speed of the wireless).

It’s pretty cool being in Poland, even if it is a bit disorienting at first to hear everyone speaking a language that has been my ’secret tongue’ to my parents since my youth :P
